World Heart Beat Music Academy is a registered charity in England and Wales, founded by Sahana Gero MBE in 2009. Today, World Heart Beat brings together music education, live performance, professional training, recording and community under one inspiring vision: to transform lives through music.

From a five-year-old picking up an instrument for the first time to an emerging artist taking their first steps into the music industry, World Heart Beat creates opportunities for people at every stage of their musical journey.

The organisation now operates across two South West London locations: its original academy on Kimber Road in Wandsworth and its cultural destination at Embassy Gardens in Nine Elms. The Story Behind World Heart Beat

The story of World Heart Beat begins with Sahana Gero MBE, a musician and educator who wanted to tackle the lack of affordable, high-quality music education available to children and young people.

The organisation grew from Sahana's work with the 51st State Band, a community music project that began in 2000. Her vision was influenced by community music education models such as Venezuela's El Sistema, with a particular focus on reaching children and young people who might otherwise face barriers to accessing musical opportunities.

In 2009, World Heart Beat was formally founded.

The academy later transformed an abandoned building into a dedicated music school, opening its doors in 2012. What began as a grassroots initiative developed into a growing musical community serving hundreds of young people. 

Over the years, World Heart Beat has continued to expand its work, creating opportunities not only for young musicians but also for emerging producers, performers and future music-industry professionals.

World Heart Beat Music Academy

At the centre of the organisation is its music academy.

The academy provides music education for children and young people, with opportunities designed for different ages, abilities and levels of experience. One of its most important principles is that financial circumstances should not prevent a young person from discovering their musical potential.

Students can explore instruments and musical disciplines ranging from piano, violin, trumpet and vocals to guitar, drums, saxophone, double bass, tabla and more.

The academy also places strong emphasis on ensemble playing and performance. Rather than learning music in isolation, students can become part of a wider musical community and gain experience performing with others.

World Heart Beat now has two key locations in South West London.

World Heart Beat Kimber Road

The Kimber Road academy in Wandsworth is the organisation's main teaching space.

Located at 58 Kimber Road, Wandsworth, London SW18 4PP, it continues the grassroots educational work that has been central to World Heart Beat since its early years.

The academy provides a welcoming environment where young people can learn instruments, participate in ensembles and develop their musical confidence.

World Heart Beat Embassy Gardens

The second location at 3 Ponton Road, Nine Elms, London SW11 7BD, takes the organisation's vision into a larger cultural and professional setting.

World Heart Beat Embassy Gardens houses concerts, a recording studio, café and selected music lessons. The venue is only a short walk from Nine Elms Underground station and features a boutique concert hall with 120 handmade seats, specialist acoustics and modern digital facilities. 

The building is also designed with accessibility in mind, including level/ramp access, wide thresholds, a lift and accessible toilet facilities. 

Together, the two sites allow World Heart Beat to combine grassroots music education with professional performance and industry development.

A Concert Hall Where Audiences Get Close to the Music

World Heart Beat Embassy Gardens is also home to a distinctive concert programme.

The venue welcomes musicians from London and around the world, creating opportunities for audiences to experience jazz, classical, global music, contemporary music, folk and other diverse musical traditions in an intimate setting.

Its current programme demonstrates the breadth of the venue's ambition, with events ranging from international artists and jazz performances to global music festivals and emerging-artist events. Upcoming programming includes the Silk Road Festival, EFG London Jazz Festival events and performances by international and UK artists.

EMERGE: Helping Young People Enter the Music Industry

For young people interested in production, songwriting, performance and the wider creative industries, World Heart Beat runs EMERGE, its talent development and music-industry training programme.

EMERGE is designed for young people aged 16–25 in South London and provides opportunities to develop practical skills, industry knowledge, creative confidence and professional networks.

World Heart Beat has also received recognition through awards and nominations, including the Kids Count "Inspire the House" award and recognition connected with the Royal Philharmonic Society. 

Her philosophy is reflected throughout World Heart Beat: music should not be reserved for those who can easily afford it or already have access to professional networks.
