UAE Union Pledge Day – Celebrating the Promise That United a Nation
Every year on July 18, the United Arab Emirates celebrates Union Pledge Day, a meaningful national occasion that honors the historic agreement that paved the way for the creation of the UAE. Officially designated in 2024 by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, the day recognizes the vision, unity, and determination that shaped the nation we know today.
Union Pledge Day commemorates the landmark meeting held on July 18, 1971, when the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and the Rulers of the Emirates signed the Declaration of the Union and approved the UAE Constitution. During this historic gathering, they also officially announced the name United Arab Emirates, marking a defining moment in the country's history.
This agreement laid the foundation for the official formation of the UAE on December 2, 1971, a date now celebrated each year as Eid Al Etihad (National Day). While December 2 marks the birth of the nation, Union Pledge Day celebrates the commitment, cooperation, and shared vision that made the Union possible.
When announcing the new national occasion in 2024, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan described Union Pledge Day as an opportunity to celebrate the nation's history and the remarkable journey that led to the establishment of the Union. The day encourages citizens, residents, and future generations to reflect on the values of unity, leadership, and national pride that continue to guide the UAE's progress.
Union Pledge Day now joins other important national occasions in the UAE, including Flag Day on November 3, Commemoration Day on November 30, and Eid Al Etihad on December 2. Together, these observances honor the country's founders, celebrate its achievements, and reinforce the spirit of unity that remains at the heart of the nation.
As the UAE continues to grow as a global leader in innovation, sustainability, and economic development, Union Pledge Day serves as a reminder that the country's success began with a shared promise to build a stronger future together. It is a day to celebrate the visionary leadership that united the Emirates and the enduring values that continue to inspire generations.
